Paul Downs Case Study
University of Calgary Standing Table
Innovative designers are incorporating the “collaborative space” concept into their projects. The proper choice of furniture can drive interaction for small groups by encouraging quick, informal meetings. To that end, we’ve been getting multiple requests for larger round tables as well as standing conference tables. Circles have always encouraged non-hierarchical interaction, but manufacturers rarely offer diameters larger than 60”. So how to accommodate larger crews? Paul Downs has the solution.
Here’s an example: a 12 foot round standing-height table built for the University of Calgary.
Commissioned by the Canada Excellence Research Chair in Materials Engineering for Unconventional Oil Reserves, the focus of the project was to encourage thought and new ideas.
To start the process, our Design Engineer Nate Rossman created this video, showing the size of the table in the room and how many chairs it could accommodate.
Size | 12ft |
Shape | Round |
Type | Standing Height Mixed Materials Table |
Project Scope | Standing height table to encourage new ideas |
Placement | Calgary, Alberta, Canada |
Custom Options | 36″ Height. Chalkboard Laminate surface. |
After reviewing the concept with the client, the decision was made to raise the top to 36” from the floor – the same as kitchen counters. We also decided to use chalkboard laminate on the top, to allow for on-the-fly note taking.
